Happy Birthday To Me!

Last week I crept over the border of the mid-twenties and turned twenty-eight! It’s a strange interim age where I don’t feel old but I don’t feel young. You know, while I don’t yet crave hard boiled lollies, I do recognise the merit in afternoon napping.

When I was nine my idea of the perfect birthday meant ten pin bowling with my school mates. At nineteen the perfect birthday had progressed (or regressed), to an evening of trashbaggery, dancing the night away at some sticky-floored night club. As we grow, the definition of a perfect birthday celebration evolves.

So here’s a recap of how I spent my 28th birthday!

You better believe I took the day off from work. Call me juvenile, but to me birthday should be free from emails and deadlines.

After a refreshing sleep in, I had a late breakfast at the new wellness eatery Greenfields. With beautiful décor and stunning views of Albert Park golf course and Albert Park Lake, this location is near and dear to me as it was once my high school stomping ground (cheers MacRob!), so it was a great venue for some birthday breaky.

For my birthday lunch, Thai food was the order of the day. Good company with my mum and sisters and good food at Rock Sugar Restaurant in South Yarra. With neon lights and fairy floss cocktails, it was a perfect birthday lunch at a very modern and thoroughly delicious Thai restaurant.

After two fantastic meals, I fell into a carb coma and had an afternoon nap (of course!).

Then the evening rolled around and the BF proved how well he knows me and we had a night at the theatre with MTC’s production of Macbeth. Look like th’ innocent flower, But be the serpent under ‘t.

The next day was some ice skating fun with the girls at Fed Square’s  Riverink. As per usual, I was the least gifted athletically out of our squad, and I gripped the wall for dear life. Even so, with the awesome tunes blaring and set by the picturesque river side, the riverink is a must-do winter activity.

Last but certainly not least it was family celebration time. It’s a tradition to have Sunday family birthday dinners at my grandparents’ house. My Abuela (AKA grandma) cooked some charquican which is one of my favourite Chilean dishes, which we gulped down alongside some beef empanadas. Dinner was finished with some decadent Adriano Zumbo chocolate cake!

Reflecting on my birthday, it’s no surprise my celebration centred largely around great food and great company. Cheers to not getting old and but getting even better!
